The 28th of May was a unique day as stakeholders and advocates of the health and reproductive rights of girls and women commemorated the menstrual hygiene day (MH Day). This year’s theme was focused on ending period poverty and period stigma.

As a result of the prevailing corona virus pandemic(Covid-19) activities to celebrate the menstrual hygiene day were held virtually. At Supporting Her Prime Initiative, we geared up to celebrate the MH Day by attending the 8th Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) virtual conference organised by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) with the theme, “Innovation in MHM: Putting Girl’s at the Center”. It was an enlightening session where we got insights on the innovations being made with regards menstrual hygiene management.

Also, we launched an online campaign tagged #MyPeriod #MyPride. This campaign was aimed at shedding light on the dangers of period poverty and period shaming in Nigeria and Africa.
In line with our commitment to empower the girl child and given the dire situation low income families are facing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have embarked on a project to provide reliefs (period products and hygiene items) to girls and women from low income families in Nigeria. We understand that periods don’t stop for pandemics and so to cushion the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and reduce the incidence of period poverty in our rural communities we have started soliciting donations from well-meaning supporters to make this project a reality.
